The first of a series of three talks on 'Trials & Tribulations', this one will focus on Rudolf Kastner, who negotiated with Adolf Eichmann in Hungary to save the lives of 1,684 Jews. After the war he was tried for supporting the nazis and was accused of 'having sold his soul to the devil'. Was he right to negotiate with the Nazis? Your views are welcome.

Adolf Eichmann - who was he and what him on the journey from Solingen to Linz, Wansee, Berlin and then to escape to Argentina before he final appearance in Jerusalem? Why did Israel break international law to capture him and was his trial the turning point in the awareness of the world towards the tragedy of the Jewish people.

The aim of the trials was to record 'an irrefutable record of what happened under the Nazi regime' but there was no jury and the judges made all the decisions. Did all the allies agree with the trials and was it a real or a show trial. Who was hanged and who escaped the noose ?

Professor Anthony Polonsky from Brandeis University will speak on the topic of Coming to Terms with the
"Dark Past" - Confronting the Holocaust in Poland and
Lithuania. The talk will be about the recent efforts of the Lithuanian authorities to indite Jewish partisans who fought against the Nazis, but on the Communist side.
