Pinner and Northwood Cheder
The Pinner and Northwood Cheder provides a traditional Jewish education for children on a Sunday morning. Classes take place at the Henry Jackson Centre at the Pinner United Synagogue from 9:30 to 12:30, with children coming from Pinner, Northwood, Ruislip and further afield.
Under the enthusiastic leadership of Headteacher, Rabbi Gavin Broder, children from school years 1 to 6 are taught in year groups. A priority is Hebrew reading, which is taught through the innovative graded “Aleph Champ” books. This is supported by teaching assistants who listen to the children read individually. Other topics are covered by a combination of formal classroom teaching and creative work, with Festival-orientated activities providing an important framework for the year. An emphasis is placed on middot (Jewish values) and Jewish history through teaching and project-work.
Pre bar- and bat-mitzvah children in Years 7 and 8 have access to an exciting two year programme, with an emphasis on media-based discussion in a less formal teaching environment.
As well as its educational role, the Pinner and Northwood Cheder serves an important social function for children who do not attend Jewish day schools. Over the years, the children have the opportunity to learn together and build friendships with their peer group from the local Community. We also hold regular “Bagel Breakfasts”, which bring the entire Cheder together.
